点评:We arrived home from our adventure less than 24 hours ago and I am already rushing to leave my review, that alone shows how keen I am to recommend Inca Land Adventures and our wonderful guides, Flavio and Dario.
Flavio was our point of contact through booking and couldn't have been happier to answer questions ahead of time. I'm not a seasoned hiker and I am an over-thinker, so I had many questions/concerns that I bothered him with! He was always quick to reply (via WhatsApp, very easy) and polite and kind. The original 4 day Inca hike that I'd looked at sold out while I researched (Machu Picchu has a strict limit on numbers of visitors each day, so act quickly once you decide dates and get booked) so we ended up booking the "Salkantay Trek Short Inca Trail" (5 days) and it seemed to be fate, it was wonderful. We still got plenty of the hike along the Inca trail itself, but mixed in we were able to also visit the beautiful Humantay Lake (day 1) and reached our max elevation (just over 4,900m/16,200ft, so higher than you reach on the 4 day Inca Trail hike, for anybody who enjoys being competitive!) on day 2 at Inca Chiriaska. Our tour saw us camping for the first 2 nights, very much a part of the experience, but also something very much out of my usual comfort zone, but the guides/porters made the whole camping ordeal as painless as possible for us. Roland and Max went ahead with a duffel bag each of our clothing/camping supplies each day, with our horseman, Antony. Making the hike look impossibly easy, they arrived much in advance of my husband and I, and had camp all set up by the time we got there. Tents (and toilet tent with toilet seat included, much to my surprise and delight!) and cooked us the most delicious meals. I was so surprised with what they were able to achieve, true culinary wizards! I'd anticipated having rather basic meals along the way, but they provided us with flavourful, true Peruvian meals, and more than we could possibly manage to eat! I'm incredibly thankful to the boys for making the camping easier on me, waking us each morning to tempt us out of the tent with a welcoming hot tea or coffee. I will mention at this point, that we went in May, the beginning of the dry season and in the Autumn for the Southern Hemisphere. The first night camping is stunning, near the base of the Salkantay glacier, but it was cold! As mentioned, I'm not usually a keen or enthusiastic camper, so anyone more used to the elements won't be as pathetic as me, but even I managed. I'd just say prepare well, as I did, if you know you feel the cold. Our tour, as I said, rather fatefully, saw us spend nights 3 & 4 in comfortable, local hotels, and actually greatly increased our enjoyment of the entire experience. I'm sure camping for 4 nights would suit many adventurers, but my husband and I have reached a point of our lives where the balance was welcome. It also meant that at points we travelled, either by car, bus or train, between a few of the Peruvian towns. I really enjoyed this as I felt that it meant we got more of a feel for the country itself.
Flavio was our guide for our first 3 days; to the lake, up the mountain and along the Inca Canal, and he was fantastic at spotting and recognising all the local wildlife, particularly birds. He recognised their calls and came armed with binoculars that he was happy to share with us so that we could observe the beautiful endemic birds. I swear that he didn't need the binoculars though, his eyesight is incredible! Able to spot a condor miles away. One of the initial reasons that I booked Inca Land Adventures for our trip was because I had read a review saying how patient Flavio was when somebody needed to take their hike slowly. This really was the case. On day 1, we had quite the elevation gain. It was the most challenging day with the greatest distance covered, and a steep climb to our highest point. The altitude really took its toll on us and, although thankfully we didn't suffer from sickness, we did notice that the thin air meant we had to really take our time. Flavio was so kind and patient, encouraging, but also just reminding us that there was no race and we should simply go at our own pace and enjoy the journey. My husband and I had chosen to take a private tour, just the two of us with the guides/porters, and again, this was a decision that I was incredibly happy that I'd made and, in our opinion, well worth the extra cost.
Dario took over for days 4 and 5, meeting us for dinner at the end of the 3rd day. He had big shoes to fill, but he managed! Friendly and incredibly knowledgeable, Dario guided us through the more jungly section of our tour to Wiñay Wayna. There were many beautiful plants and flowers in the microclimate of that area, and a keen gardener himself, Dario was able to tell us what they all were. His enthusiasm for, and depth of knowledge of, Incan history was amazing and he was able to share it all with us, well prepared with pictures of various characters from their history, and drawings and artefacts found, bringing the history to life. The 4th day also had a very steep climb for us, because part of the usual trail is currently closed for repair following a rockfall during the wet season, and I can confirm that Dario was equally as patient and encouraging as Flavio with slower hikers! We trekked to the Sun Gate, which Dario was able to teach us about, and had truly the most magnificent first view of Machu Picchu. Sensational. Our "Salkantay Trek Short Inca Trail" was much less busy than the 4-day Inca Trail tour, which I'm sure is still wonderful, but we were incredibly lucky to be by ourselves for much of the trip, avoiding the crowds and much more our scene. From the Sun Gate we walked down to Machu Picchu itself, taking in the stunning views, then returned the next day to explore a different part of this magnificent place. Again, Dario was able to confidently and expertly able to tell us all about; the buildings, the temples, the history. Truly fantastic.
The entire experience was meticulously planned. From Flavio meeting us the night before our departure to answer any last questions, let us know what to expect and to hand over our 2 loaned duffel bags so that we could prepare and pack, to the train tickets booked in advance. Hotels prearranged, packed breakfasts/lunches along the way when we weren't with our delightful cheffing porters, dinners out included while we were staying in the hotels. Seamless.
I really couldn't be more thankful for our exceptional experience and that Inca Land Adventures - Flavio, Dario and their helpers - made it happen. Thank you all so much. I couldn't recommend you more. Tupananchikkama, until we meet again.
