Style without enough Substance
Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University的点评
点评：The Eskenazi Museum needs to display more art. I can’t state this more clearly. The building is as beautiful as everyone says but as an art museum, the displays are too small. There are two large gallery rooms, one for modern and other for works older than 100 (approximately). Going very slowly, I finished the two galleries in an hour. For a museum that boasts “45,000 objects”, I expect a larger quantity of art displayed. They have more and you can even see pics of storage areas. Why not use these to share the art with the world?
What is on display is wonderful. Gerome has a self-portrait here. Tarbell and Calliboitte have superb works. An electric Hampel painting blew my mind. In the modern area a Balthus large canvas was awesome as was a wonderful Picasso.
They have no true gift shop. And the galleries are patrolled by students. I found that when I entered a gallery (I was usually the only one), the student/guard stopped looking at their computer and got up to nervously walk around while I was there. Then they would sit back down when I left.
I left feeling like the Eskenazi has a beautiful shell but the interior is only 10% full. Why have a lovely building and display so little art? If you are in the area, it makes sense to visit but don’t go out of your way to come here. Newfields & Cincinnati are close with much more to art see.
