Elmley National Nature Reserve - Day Visit的点评
点评：I recently booked the Dusk Owl & Wildlife Walking Safari so took the opportunity to arrive much earlier in the day to make the most of it. I was not disappointed. In some ways it is similar to Rainham Marshes, in that you drive through an industrialised area to be transported away from it and into nature. But it is on a grander scale.
It was a glorious autumnal day, so I spent a significant part of my time on the trails. I visited two of the hides but did not have time for all. There was a kestrel on a gate post as I arrived and apparently a bittern and short-eared owl appeared in the morning, though sadly I missed them. What I did see was an abundance of wildlife and I hope some of the photos illustrate this. I met some very friendly people, some of whom were staying and others regular visitors.
I see some complaints about the fee (£8 per person). But the owners are clear about why this is levied and what it is used for. I believe the owners are responsible for the nearby Swale Nature Reserve. That is free and is highly recommended too, but Elmley offers even more for nature lovers. Note there is no cafe, so bring your own supplies. I just made sure I had a decent breakfast :)
The Dusk Owl & Wildlife Walking Safari was worth the journey. It is popular. I think there were about ten of us. Simon, the warden, is great. Very patient, informative and must have X-ray vision. We didn't see any owls at first, but as dusk approached he somehow spotted a little owl very well camouflaged indeed. Then a barn owl appeared. At the close of the walk he offered to wait a little past the scheduled close to see if any more owls appeared, and voila, a long-eared owl duly obliged.
Highly recommended.
