Aggressive usher spoiled the visit...
Basel Historical Museum - Barfuesserkirche的点评
点评：The Basel Historical Museum is a very extensive collection of Swiss artifacts and art, covering a broad range of eras. The exhibits are on three floors of a former church, which gives it a unique and inspiring ambiance. We had Basel cards, so admission was half price for us, and included entry to two other museums within walking distance.
Unfortunately, we didn't get to visit the other museums, but if we visit Basel again, we would make the effort. The descriptions of the exhibits are all in German, but those who don't speak the language can borrow tablets which translate. There is also a public restroom in the museum, which to be honest, is the main reason why we visited. We even picked up some items at the small gift shop.
So why three stars? It's because of one of the ushers/security guards, who approached me after I took off my heavy down coat. We visited the museum on a very cold day, so I was bundled up. But after about twenty minutes in the museum, I started to get too hot. I took off my coat, and all of a sudden, I was staring at a man in black clothes. I was shocked when he confronted me, and proceeded to explain my "two choices" in dealing with my coat while I was in the museum. I could either put it in a locker or wear it.
Now, I live in Germany, and I have encountered lockers in museums before. I'm even grateful for them. But this man's approach to me was very aggressive and annoying, although I could tell he was really trying to be polite. Perhaps he was concerned about trying to speak English. Or maybe he felt the need to be aggressive because I was stunned by his insistent demands and was not immediately walking to the lockers. Maybe that made him think I was going to be a problem.
I must have looked quite irritated, because he kept explaining while I stood there about to comply. That made the situation even worse. At one point, he said there were "800 year old artifacts" in the museum that were somehow at risk if I carried my coat, rather than wearing it. When, over a couple of minutes, he kept harassing me, as I stood there dumbfounded. I finally snarled, "It's not a problem. I understand." And then at last he went away, once he saw that I was complying.
That obnoxious encounter REALLY affected the visit and dampened any enthusiasm I had in looking at the exhibits. I kind of wanted to just leave and never come back. I'm glad I didn't, because I did enjoy the museum, once I was able to relax and recover from that encounter.
Either a sign or a prompt from the cashier could have avoided this unpleasantness. Or perhaps the usher could have said, "Would you like to stow your coat in a locker?" or "Please use a locker instead of carrying your coat." That would have been much better than a stern lecture and talk about "my two choices." I felt like a naughty child, and that is not how paying visitors want to feel.
I understand museum employees wanting visitors to stow large bags and such. In fact, putting the coat in the locker was even more convenient for me. But no one likes to be aggressively chastised for doing something as simple as removing a coat when they get too warm. And the line about the 800 year old artifacts was just weird. What did he think I was going to do with the coat, other than carry it? It was very offensive.
For the price of admission to that museum, it seems to me that the ushers could be better trained. Even just a friendly or polite invitation to stow the coat would have been much better than menacingly being told "You have two choices..." and then hear a lecture about how my decision to take off my coat somehow puts the exhibits at risk. Sorry, but that's ridiculous!
