贝尔维第宫的点评
点评：There is a lot to see at the Belvedere Museum and, regretfully, I under-allocated my time. I purchased the combined Upper and Lower ticket for 29.90€. They also offered an audio guide rental for 5€, but I did not have the time to stand around and listen to the commentary, so I passed.
I started at the Upper Belvedere, which has great works by Lucas Cranach, Egon Schiele, Edvard Munch, Alexej von Jawlensky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Claude Monet, and Gustav Klimt. The have, of course, Klimt's most famous piece called "The Kiss," which was almost impossible to get a close look at. The room was consistently packed, so that was a bit of a disappointment, but it was much easier to enjoy some of his other works. The well-known painting of Napoleon by Jacques Louis David was also on display and very popular with the crowds.
I didn't have much time to enjoy the gardens, fountains, and pools on the way to the Lower Belvedere, but it was early Spring, so there wasn't much in bloom anyway. Some of the pools were still empty.
The Lower Belvedere had a nice exhibition of Slovenian paintings and some amazingly restored palace rooms. They also had an interesting special exhibit about the use of technology in art. One part dealt with analyzing the inner layers of Klimt's "The Kiss" in an attempt to understand more about his working process. Another part attempted to reconstruct the original colors of Klimt's lost ceiling paintings in the University of Vienna that were destroyed in World War II. All that is left of them are some black and white photos. So it was really astonishing to see the full color reproductions on display.
I recommend spending at least half a day here. If you are an art lover and want to read (or listen to) all of the commentary, you can easily make a full day of it.
