点评:Place de la Bourse is the popular square located on the Garonne River and facing the famous Water Mirror. It’s a magnificent square, surrounded by grand, 18th century buildings, including the Hôtel des Fermes, the Hôtel de la Bourse the central pavilion. Together they form two perfect wings that frame the square.
We were hoping to get the classic Bordeaux photo of the Place de La Bourse buildings reflected in the Water Mirror. However it was an overcast day and a steady breeze sent ripples across the surface of the water so we missed out on this. I think you need a sunny day and no wind.
There are two other points of interest at the sqaure.
i) The first is the ornate, 19th century fountain which is the centrepiece of the square. Cherubs circle the base and 3 barely-robed, bronze females stand at the top. These are the daughters of the Greek god, Zeus - Aglaé, Euphrosyne and Thalie. Each of them bestowed a special gift on mankind. Aglaé brought charm and elegance, Euphrosyne bestowed joy and happiness and Thalie brought youth and beauty.
ii) The other is the strange little figures known as mascarons. These odd faces that appear above the windows and doors of the squares buildings are characteristic symbols of the city. What’s really interesting is that they are not all the same. There are female and male characters. They have different expressions, and different hairstyles and headwear. We saw some grotesque, gargoyle-like faces and others that looked like ancient gods. There was a Turkish man wearing a large turban, and an African face (a reminder of Bordeaux’s slave trade history). Some smiled pleasantly down at you, while others were open-mouthed as if yelling. Some glared fiercely down and others looked off to the side and into the distance. Altogether, there are something like 80+ faces but if you don’t know they are there, then they are easily missed.
