I took the Bybanen tram to the Medical College stop, then followed a steep road uphill (I later discovered there are steps on the way back!). Despite being such a popular attraction, the entrance isn’t very clearly marked, so expect a bit of searching.
Once you’re in, and if you’ve pre-booked your ticket (the Bergen Card only gives a small discount), the process is smooth. The cable cars are unmanned and run automatically at regular intervals, taking you up the mountain efficiently.
On windy days, the ride can feel a bit shaky and even slightly scary, as the cars move around in the gusts. But the views at the top are absolutely spectacular — you can see the entire city, fjords, and surrounding mountains.
Be cautious, though: there’s no one policing the top area, so take care of yourself and your loved ones, especially if it’s windy or icy. In summer, this place would be even better — calmer weather, clearer skies, and the option to hike up or down if you’re feeling adventurous.
