点评:So it's our last day in Sicily & I was stressing over whether to do the Circumetnea or not. My guide book said it was a "must do" but as others have said information about it is not great.
So the night before I read everything I could & had a plan for the next day.
We caught the 11.15 train from Letojanni to Giarre Riposta. It cost 6.10 euros for both of us one way ( I accidentally put my husband down as a child & was expecting to have to pay the extra but got away with it. He was very well behaved 😊).
We walked & found the Ferrovia Circumetnea station which was a short distance away & bought our ticket 15.80 euros for the two of us. I decided we would only go as far as Randazzo & come back the same way.
We then had time to kill until 13.50 so found a bar & had a beer. Got back to the station early so we could choose our seats on the left hand side when the train arrived. Didn't really have to worry as there was only one other couple catching it.
Sadly, it was a modern train & not the vintage one & the seats looked like they hadn't been cleaned in years.
We set off at a very sedate speed & the views of the countryside were very pretty. Unfortunately, Etna like many volcanoes seems to have its own microclimate & the grey clouds covering her did not lift.
At Randazzo the other couple carried on to Paterno & we caught the replacement bus back ( this was introduced on 14th October).
The bus trip back was interesting as we went through many of the towns on the route & got a different perspective. Also the driver had to negotiate a recent rock fall.
So if we'd had wonderful views of Etna & had ridden on the vintage train I would have scored it higher, that said it wasn't a bad way to spend our last full day on the Island.
Many thanks to all those OPs who posted such useful information which was a great help.
I've posted a current photo of the Ferrovia Circumetnea station as it is no longer red & doesn't have a sign on the outside.
