点评:The main problem is that the section from Catania to Paterno is closed. This is because the metro line from Catana is being extended; I’m not sure where to, possibly Paterno. It’s a huge civil engineering project, with massive roadworks, hence the cut. I hope that this is temporary, because the station at Catana is still staffed, and there is rolling stock there.
We did the trip in reverse, which is much easier. We were based in Catana , so took the main line from Catania to Piposto, and picked up the Circumetna from there. Be aware that the Circumatra station is a short walk from the mainline station. If you want to do the circuit, you will need to catch the 8.56, or 13.41 (see photo of the timetable from the Riposto booking area). The booking hall is not manned all the time… but should be when a train is due!!
We took the 13.41. At Randazzo you switch to another train… it was waiting for us. Whereas the Riposto to Randazzo section was modern rolling stock, The Randazzo to Paterno train was old 1950’s stock, with windows that open and allow you to really enjoy the spectacular views. We were lucky, it was a clear day… see the photos!
At Paterno, the bus that connects to the Metro system at Nesima was, again, waiting for us. You’ll get a good idea of the size of the engineering project on your way.
It was a stunning trip, which cost 15.8 euros for the two of us. Such a pity it’s so underused. Apart from us, there were just four French ladies. It’s a gem of a trip which just isn’t promoted by the Sicilian Tourist Office. Such a shame.
I just regret that we didn’t take the 8.56 train as that would have allowed us time to have some lunch and explore Randozzo.
