Looks great, great location, but very impractical

点评：My wife and I are keen lifelong wildlife watchers, and binoculars, a spotting scope and a good camera with a long telephoto lens are always with us in the car.
We have sat in many wildlife hides over upwards of 50 years, and without doubt this is the most badly designed we have ever used. Aesthetically, it looks great - it appears to have been designed by a modern architect who creates very interesting houses but has never watched how people watch wildlife! The location is great, from the water it looks really contemporary, and the boardwalk down to it is excellent. But as a hide, it just doesn’t work – but why?
It fails for many interacting reasons. The first is the extreme thickness of the walls coupled with small size of the ‘windows’. The result is an incredibly narrow field of view through each aperture. And if you want to photograph something flying past, there is no time to spot it, focus on it, and press the button before …woops, my lens just hit the thick wall!
Secondly, the heights of the viewing ‘slits’ are just wrong. Tall people have to bend and peer, short people have to stand on tiptoe, and there is really just one where a keen wildlife spotter can properly set up a tripod and scope.
In summary – the window slits are too small, too deep, at the wrong heights, and there is nowhere to sit down and simply watch – wildlife takes patience!
The next time whoever commissioned this expensive, impressive but deeply impractical structure thinks of building another wildlife hide, PLEASE talk to the experts, the people who have built hundreds of excellent, fit-for-purpose hides over recent decades – the RSPB, the WWT and the county Wildlife Trusts.
