点评:Our visit to the SA Armour Museum at the Tempe Military base in Bloemfontein exceeded all expectations. This military base is as big as a small town and as such we got lost inside the base as it is a maize of roads. Thus, we can understand why you have to make an appointment to visit the Artillery Museum. Security at the main gate and at the Artillery Division gate was tight and we were checked at both gates to ensure we are on the list of visitors by checking our IDs against the visitor lists.
Arriving at the Museum we again got lost between the many buildings. We knew someone would come search for us, since we did not arrive at our destination as per their visitor schedule. We stayed put and a few minutes later we were found by the Museum Manager, Major Dana Swanepoel.
Major Swanepoel's 30-years of strategic-, operational-, tactical- and historical military knowledge was impressive. He really went the extra mile with our tour of the Armour Museum and the static armour vehicles on display. From what I could deduce from my conversations with him, he was involved in the Research and Development of some of our South African Manufactured armour vehicles. He had an excellent knowledge of the developments and enhancements that were made on these vehicles over the years.
A walkthrough of the museum with its murals, memorabilia and others on display would not mean much if you were to walk through without a guide. Each and every photo and every piece of memorabilia had some provenance or storey or history behind it, and it was evident that a lot of time and care has gone into every exhibition item to ensure it is worth its place in the museum. We were amazed with the stories behind the photos and other memorabilia and a lot of it was backed up with the static armour exhibitions.
The armour vehicles on display are widespread and could be tiresome for the elderly and kids as you have to walk to these vehicles. We also picked a hot sunny day. Fortunately the cooldrinks in the Memorabilia Shop was ice cold. Please support the shop as the museum is financially dependent on donations and fund raisers.
The armoured vehicles cover WW1, WW2 and the Savanna War era. These vehicles are just awesome to view as they are huge and just looks fierce and scary.
If you are a military enthusiast, I can recommend visiting the museum.
Major Dana Swanepoel has my vote for Minister of Defence!
