An amazing day in the Calakmul reserve

点评：We booked a tour and luckily we got Jhovanni as our guide. Our trip started with a jungle walk and drive (‘Mexican safari’ !) through the Calakmul biosphere reserve. An amazing experience, we saw tapir, toucans and lots of monkeys ( howler and spider). Jhovanni was great explaining about the wildlife, plants and how the community used plants etc in their life.
Calakmul city itself is incredible, the absolute classic Mayan site. You can climb the big pyramids and the view is breathtaking. You can even see the towers of El Mirador with binoculars. Plus lots more monkeys!
We went to Balamkú (Jaguar temple) and this was a really interesting site which again Jhovanni explained really clearly and interestingly. Plus lots more monkeys!!
Finally we went to the bat volcano which is a unique (well a handful of places in the world) spectacle. You need a local guide and Jhovanni sorts everything and guides you in.
Overall a fantastic day with a tremendous guide who we can’t recommend highly enough. (He has helped several international TV crews previously and clearly knows the area extremely well).
