点评:Having returned to Varese again after many decades, I wanted to admire the Estensi Gardens, of which I had a beautiful memory. I walked along them to the top of the ridge marking the ancient border with the gardens of Villa Mirabello.
Having in the meantime visited the gardens of the Schönbrunn palace in Vienna (while I didn't have this term of comparison at the time of my previous visits to Varese) I was able to evaluate the role of the Viennese gardens in inspiring the client, Francesco III d’Este, and its builder, the engineer Giuseppe Antonio Bianchi.
Francesco, of the family of the Dukes of Este who for centuries had been lords of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and above all of Ferrara until 1598 (the year in which the city was annexed to the Papal State), was able to access the position of governor of "Austrian Lombardy", as he was related to the Habsburg family. By this way a reflection of the imperial splendor of Vienna was able to reverberate on this small pre-Alpine city.
The garden, originally (1765) inspired by the "geometric" gardens of the Renaissance, of Italian, then French tradition, was partially modified in the 19th century, inspired by the "romantic gardens" of the time. And in fact this mix of styles can be clearly seen by walking through both the open spaces of the park and the paths running through the "green amphitheater" behind it.
In conclusion, Francesco III d'Este's love for Varese on the one hand, for Vienna on the other, procured this splendid gift to the city.
