Highway 43 is Great...the road to the coast (headed to Ahititi) off of Hwy 43 is the real Forgotten Highway ~

点评：After reading reviews and info, I was concerned. Bathroom stops are a big deal for me, but I did great. We came from the Stratford side as we had stayed in New Plymouth the night before. We stopped in Stratford, then on our way. Highway 43 was easy. There are some drops, but just stay on the highway :-). Two lanes, all paved. We got to Wangamamona. Had lunch at hotel and bought lot of souvenirs. Got the passport with a stamp. A souvenir stamp can invalidate your real passport. We then headed on Highway 43, got through the tunnel ok. It's short, not a big deal. Just stop and make sure no one is coming through. Go slow. The other side of the tunnel we got stopped as there was a car in a ravine and they had called a wrecker. It was going to be 30 to 40 minutes wait. No go for me with bathroom issues. She offered a porta pottie nearby, but we had considered heading off to the coast to drive back to Auckland, so we turned around and headed off of 43 to Ahititi. Well...that's the real Forgotten Highway...Not Highway 43. Now we didn't get through the other half of 43, but if it was the same as the first half, then not a big deal. The road to the coast was narrow, although we did fine. Not paved all the way, lots of gravel, Cows coming at us. We just stopped and let them pass. We lost cell service, but we did on 43 too, so...We lost GPS, but at the fork, we knew to stay left to get to the coast, so all in all. It was an adventure and I'm glad we did it. It took awhile on that road, but it was an adventure and once we got to the coast, the drive along the coast with the sea and whitecaps was beautiful. I'm glad we did it and we felt we drove the 'real' Forgotten Highway.
