点评:The ruins are located just NE of Begunje, at the southern tip of the Draga Valley. As majestic as they might look, if visited at the right time (more about that below), it really shouldn’t be the only reason to visit Begunje but rather a stopover on your hike further to the valley.
First things first. Begunje is a pretty nice town but with a very huge downside: it’s located absolutely too close to Bled, infamous for being overpacked with tourists in the worst sense of the word. In other words, if your visit is not planned properly, these extremely annoying elements may completely ruin your experience. If possible, try to visit during a shoulder season, ideally when foliage doesn’t obstruct the majority of views.
The castle’s southernmost and lowest part (BTW, it’s a privately owned and inhabited house) is located at the road to the Draga Valley, a short stroll from Begunje’s downtown where free (as of early 2025) parking lots are available. If you expect some official parking lots right near the castle, you may turn around immediately and return back to your peers in Bled! Seriously, if unable to walk even that short distance from Begunje, how on Earth do you imagine ascending all those uneven paths and stairs to the castle’s upper parts? BTW, if it’s not clear from the previous sentence, at least basic hiking shoes are actually essential.
To be honest, walking the main road from Begunje is actually not very pleasant, as the road continues further to the valley and may be quite busy with vehicles of self declared “mountaineers”, “hikers”, etc., who feel a desperate need to drive as far into mountains as possible, possibly to peaks themselves (and most of them really like posting about “unspoilt nature” etc.). Indeed a more pleasant and more spectacular, if a bit longer, alternative trail exists, advertised as “Lamberg’s Trail” (Lambergova pot) by the local tourist society. From Begunje’s downtown, head northwards to the hamlet of Krpin first (BTW, another free parking lot available there) where the path finally branches off the road. Initially just a typical forest trail, eventually it spectacularly traverses Mali vrh’s almost vertical southern face, passes the Zijalka Cave (not very interesting, TBH) and reaches the castle, allowing you to see it from a totally different perspective than most low quality tourists do.
