One of the Ruins Inside the Archaeological Park of Urbs Salvia

点评：If you have some spare time in the Marche area, the archaeological park of Urbs Salvia is a nice place to visit. It’s a sprawling 40 hectare park with a handful of ancient ruins including this theatre.
It’s free to walk through the park and see the theatre (other parts like the Criptoportico temple and the underground aqueduct have a small entry fee).
Built in 23 AD, the theatre was a central feature of Urbs Salvia. The town was founded as a Roman colony in the 2nd century BC and was a large, thriving settlement. Its theatre was one of the largest theatres in central Italy and was a sign of just how prosperous and successful the town was.
It’s located near the top of the hill, and is the first sight you come to if you walk down from the town of Urbisaglia. From here, if you stand with your back to the theatre, the the centre of the city would lie in front of you, with the the forum in the middle. Beyond that, at the bottom of the hill is the the sacred area with the remains of a temple and criptoportico and just outside the city walls was the amphitheatre.
There’s not much of the theatre left now and what is left, is largely overgrown and can only be seen at a distance from behind a tall barrier. We visited last year and the surrounding growth was still untended and had not been cut back.
We relied upon the large information board next to the site. We spent a bit of time working out the configuration of the theatre, using the diagram on the board. It took us a while and it took a bit of imagination to try to conjure up an idea of what it once looked like.
NOTE: A visit here is easily combined with a trip to the nearby Chiaravalle Abbey complex.
