Interesting clocktower, the clock has a story to tell
Littlehampton Clock Tower的点评
点评:Saturday 29th June we took a stroll along Littlehampton High Street, where this clock tower is virtually the only interesting feature. It stands on the pedestrianised section of Street in front of the entrance to a Supermarket.
It is know as the Millennium Clock as it was built to commemorate and celebrate the new millennium of 2000.
The four sided structure is wider at the bottom and tapers in slightly up to the square at the top of the Tower which houses the four clock faces, one on each side. Each clock face has golden Roman numerals around accompanied with golden hands.
This is topped by a weathervane which has a metal plaque bearing the Town's coat of arms and it's motto "Progress".
There is also a light on each side of the tower so it is illuminated at night.
At the time of our visit all four clockfaces were working and telling the correct time.
We did learn a bit of the history of the clockface which was made in the 1920's by John Smith and Sons of Clerkenwell, London.
It is believed that the clock was originally made for a Church in Portsmouth, which was bombed during World War II. In 1950 it was donated to the Council, by a businessman, so that it could be displayed in the Town. Sadly this did not happen and it remained in storage up to the 1980's, when it was purchased by the Town's Museum.
It finally found it's new home in the year 2000 as part of the Millennium Clock, now located on the High Street.
