点评:We booked the Ultimate Spa Day and the Mum-to-Be package as an engagement treat using money we’d received as gifts. With our first baby due in a few weeks, we wanted one last relaxing day together before becoming parents. Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the most disappointing spa experiences we’ve ever had.
The biggest shock came as soon as we arrived. We expected to walk into a tranquil spa but were instead directed to what was essentially a public leisure centre. The facilities are shared with hotel guests and the public, something that wasn’t made clear when booking. The pool was packed with children and incredibly noisy. As I’m eight months pregnant, I couldn’t use the sauna, steam room or jacuzzi, so the pool was the only facility available to me. It was so busy that I didn’t even get in.
We weren’t given towels, only robes, and even had to be given €1 coins to use the lockers. There are no dedicated spa changing facilities either, so we had to change in the public leisure centre, walk back to the spa for our treatments, walk back again afterwards to get changed and then return to the spa once more just to pay. It felt completely disjointed and nothing like the luxury spa experience we had paid for.
The robe I was given was rough, worn and far too small for someone heavily pregnant.
The treatments were equally disappointing. My fiancé and I were in the same room with two therapists who spent parts of the treatment whispering to each other, while product bottles were constantly being pumped loudly as though they were almost empty. It wasn’t remotely relaxing.
The facial was the worst I’ve ever had. There was no consultation about my skin, no explanation of the products being used and no indication that the treatment had been tailored to me. I actually had to ask for my hair to be covered before she started. The therapist left the room during the treatment, leaving me lying there with product on my face and damp cotton pads over my eyes. A peel-off mask got stuck in my hair and eyebrows and had to be scrubbed off. By the end my face felt so greasy that I had to dry it with a towel myself. I left with no confidence that the therapist had any real knowledge of skincare. It felt more like someone rubbing products onto my face than a professional facial.
Afterwards we went for what was advertised as a spa lunch, only to discover it was simply a choice of four appetisers. Again, not what we expected from a premium spa package.
We’ve eaten at Castleknock Hotel many times and have always had lovely experiences, which is why we booked the spa without hesitation. Sadly, the spa fell well below expectations.
For the price we paid, we could have enjoyed a genuinely luxurious spa day elsewhere. Instead, it felt like a leisure centre with treatment rooms attached. I would not recommend this spa to anyone looking for a peaceful, high-quality spa experience.
