Royal & Derngate isn’t one monolithic venue
Royal & Derngate Theatre的点评
点评：First thing to say is that Royal & Derngate is an arts venue comprising a big auditorium (the Derngate, capacity 1,200) the Royal (small Victorian theatre, capacity 450) and the Filmhouse (2 smallish screens) as well as other Underground performance spaces (used less often). Each has it’s own character and specialism so beware reviews that don’t distinguish.
Second point is that not all events are produced/promoted by R&D - the venue may have just been hired as part of a tour. On the other hand, some are booked by the R&D team and other shows (those badged as ‘Made in Northampton’) are original productions, making the venue one of only a dozen or so large theatres outside London commissioning new work. In recent years several productions have transferred to the West End.
The Derngate is the venue for large-scale orchestral concerts, dance, comedy and music (including tribute bands) as well as theatre (usually crowd-pleasing tours of big shows especially musicals).
The smaller Royal is the home of original productions and touring theatre. The underground spaces are often used for smaller scale comedy gigs and experimental theatre.
The Filmhouse is a modern, two-screen, independent boutique cinema with a bar and as well as new releases, it shows more esoteric stuff.
All in all, a pretty comprehensive mix. When you include separate venues nearby (like the Old Savoy and Roadmender) it means Northampton has a more vibrant performing arts scene than might be imagined.
