点评:This is a review for the immersive museum experience only and not the App. There was some vague mention of an app for a walking tour afterwards, but Winchester seems to be a total blackspot for my phone and I wasn’t up for starting at a screen anymore than I have to. It’s only after reading the other reviews on here that I reflected I might have missed something by not installing the app - but ce la vie, we had a good time anyway.
This is a sweet little interactive experience. Reception staff were so friendly and engaging, explaining it all to us. There’s an opportunity for kids to pick an Anglo Saxon tabard to wear so that they too can be in character. It’s quite polished, with a dramatic introductory video before you step in, giving you a chance to adjust to the step back in time.
Inside, there are Anglo Saxon board games which the characters were happy to teach us. The highlight was the acting and the storytelling, which we absolutely loved. A bit of audience participation with riddles. Backstories and interaction are good. There’s also a couple of fun trails to complete, so kids are well occupied while you look around.
It’s not all perfect. There are some boards to read and a basic 2d map with lights, but that was the kind of thing you’d expect in a free local museum. There’s also some touch screens that tell you about the making of the Assassins Creed computer game, but I hadn’t played it so I wasn’t interested. It could all be improved with more real artefacts - because there’s barely a handful on display - and object handling. Perhaps some Anglo Saxon craft demonstration? More information altogether. I can’t help but compare it to Jorvik, where you get so much more for the same entrance price. But I understand it’s early days and I think this is the start of something special. And I was so grateful that it was quiet and relaxed in here during a school holiday. This is much more friendly to those with sensory needs.
This is definitely one of the best things in Winchester for children under 12. It’s pitched at the right level for young families and we had a brilliant time.
It works out as good value if you buy an explorer pass to cover this alongside the Great Hall, and the City and Westgate museums. Thank you to all the staff here, you’re doing a great job! We genuinely enjoyed our visit. I know a lot more about the Anglo Saxons than I did this morning.
