Amazing experience away from the crowds

点评：This area is definitely worth a visit. Lots of interesting cave dwellings and churches with a fraction of the crowds.
We hired a car in Goreme and drove ourselves as the cost was similar to a taxi. It was very straightforward to drive with minimal traffic on the roads, which are overall in good condition the whole way. Took about 40 minutes but it feels a world away from the Goreme tourist triangle. Type “Soğanlı Ören Yeri” into google maps and you will get to a medium sized parking area for the park. There is more parking around too - just look at the satellite image on the map.
There is a museum office in a sand coloured stone building close to that parking lot where you need to buy a ticket. The man working was extremely friendly and helpful.
From that parking lot you can drive into the park area for about half the distance, stopping to walk up to the churches/dwellings as you go. We would recommend just walking though because it’s not THAT far, and when you get about halfway, ie to where there is another restaurant and parking area on the map, the rest of the park is accessible only on foot. So you have to walk out and back if you park up there, whereas if you park at the entrance you can just do a loop and not worry about the limited space to pull off for all the places to stop in the first half.
Beware that there are a lot of steep, slippery paths and stairs involved - it’s up and down the hills to get to each site, so you’ll get your exercise in. There is very limited shade. If it’s a hot summer day you will want a hat.
There is a really quaint little restaurant near the ticket office called Soganli Kapadokya Restaurant. It’s very tourist oriented of course but the food was nice and it’s got a lot of really wonderful outside seating in a leafy setting. Some tables are even in a small apple orchard. Cash only. A big meal for two with soft drinks was about 900 lira.
