A beautiful but vulnerable town

点评：A beautiful but vulnerable place, that is Onagawa.
Having read Richard Lloyd-Parry’s excellent book Ghosts of the Tsunami, my wife and I spent a couple of days driving though Miyagi and Iwate prefectures to experience for ourselves the places and landscape that were so devastated by the 2011 Tsunami inundation. The recovery will never be complete, of course, but what is being achieved is quite amazing although, understandably, not with widespread support.
Onagawa was brutally dismantled by a wave of quite epic proportions but on the day we visited it was one of those cold, crisp but sunny days with quiet noise of the sea punctuated by the sound of gulls circulating over the nearby fish factories upon which the town prosperity is based. The location of the town is beautiful but that is also its vulnerability given the proximity to the tectonic forces out beyond its picturesque bay.
The police box lays ripped from its foundations on its side with its metal staircase bent and torn providing evidence of the force and extent of the waves. The new street built up to the new railway station is lovely and people are genuinely warm and welcoming.
The nearby hospital survived the onslaught of the wave but only just and the garden at the top of the stairs and the lower floors were inundated. As you stand at the top and look out and around it seems almost impossible that were the case.
