Great to learn about traditional Kochi city life

点评：Besides being the quarter of Kochi where the synagogue and the Dutch palace are located, Mattancherry is also a very lively working-class neighborhood. Crisscrossed by narrow lanes and alleys it is densely populated. People of different religions and ethnicities are living together in relative harmony (still). There is always something going on: a procession by Catholics behind a statue of Jacob or a Hindu festival with a big elephant and wild dansers and music players surrounding it.
Historically Mattancherry was a gift (mathana) of land (cheri) to Jewish (spice) traders by the Hindu raja seated at his palace. The spice trade is still ongoing, but the Jewish character of the neighborhood has disappeared.
It is a great area to observe traditional Kerala city life, but the exhaust fumes of numerous auto rickshaws, motorbikes, cars and other vehicles, not to mention the noise pollution are at times hard to endure. Especially when it is hot and there is no wind.
