We are two White British pensioners. We took three young siblings, 11, 15, 20 & just graduated); They are First Generation born British, of Ghanaian parents. I wanted to share this play with them.
We loved the play, but we are also old enough to remember the late, great Pan-African leader Kwame Nkruma; The young people had no experience of live theatre, and none of them has travelled abroad at all, let alone to Ghana.
All 5 of us thoroughly enjoyed the play: the synergy between the two protagonists was delicious, the humour genuine, the crux of the narrative compelling.
After the performance, all 3 of our guests chatted between themselves, all the way home: about the play; about parallels with their parents’ attitudes and values; about their own identities; about desire to travel, about not having any meaningful Ghanaian language, about aspiration, about live theatre versus TV drama or cinema.
DRUM delivered SO MUCH in that hour! We loved it, for many reasons. It comes highly recommended.
