Kilembe Trail with Margherita Peak 9-16Sep2025.
I chose Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions for a multi-day adventure in the Rwenzori Mountains, with the goal of reaching Margherita Peak (5,109 m).
The company offers the Kilembe Trail, a route they developed themselves, with several huts along the way.
The standard package is structured over 8 days, but it’s worth contacting them directly if you’d like to know different itinerary.
I went in September, fully aware that it marked the beginning of the rainy season.
Be mindful of timing: heavy rains mean very muddy and challenging trails, making the trek more demanding!!
Consider that the weather forecast are not followed.
In my case, the weather was generally poor—rain almost every day—but luckily we only had to walk under the rain twice (on day 2 and day 7).
Day 7 was by far the toughest, with heavy rain and extremely muddy trails.
On summit day (6th), however, I was lucky: we reached the peak in good conditions, with clear views all around.
The guides were excellent—skilled, professional, and always available.
They not only led the trek safely but also cooked surprisingly good meals.
The porters were also great support throughout the expedition.
Despite the mud, the company is constantly improving the trail, installing more wooden walkways (work continues during the dry season).
The trek itself is physically demanding in some days, even for experienced hikers, but absolutely rewarding.
The trek is structured with shorter stages during the first five days to allow for proper acclimatization and to avoid overexertion before the summit.
The huts are comfortable and well maintained.
The changing vegetation is stunning, and at higher altitudes you’ll find giant lobelias surrounded by snow. Crossing two glaciers on the way to Margherita Peak is a unique experience in Africa.
