俄克拉荷马战舰纪念馆的点评
点评：I have visited a few retired aircraft carriers and battleships, but none come close to the experience I had on the USS Missouri. The visit began with a 35 minute tour and narration by a little Japanese woman who had an immense amount of knowledge about the vessel and its history. I could have listened to her for another hour but, alas, she needed to go back and get another group for its tour. Afterward, the tour is self-led, and I’ve never seen a retired vessel with so much of its interior accessible to visitors. I explored every nook and cranny, read most of the placards and watched all the videos and interviews along the way. (To read everything would probably take 3-4 hours; there’s much information provided.)
The ship, itself, is an amazing piece of engineering and manufacturing. It’s impossible not to be awed by the scope of what this magnificent machine represents. The fact that it was pulled out of mothballs under the Reagan administration and underwent 8 months of refurbishment and modernization makes the story even more compelling.
There's a wonderfulness to having the (sunken) USS Arizona lined up nose-to-nose with the USS Missouri: from the tragic beginning to the triumphant end of the U.S. involvement in World War II. I got a lump in my throat. It was among my favorite experiences in Oahu.
