点评:The Aspire Lounge, Perth International Airport
A masterclass in lowered expectations.
The Aspire Lounge is named with a kind of tragic optimism. Aspire. Not achieve, not deliver, just Aspire. As in: one day, maybe, if conditions improve and everyone involved tries a little harder. Sadly, that day has not arrived.
Somewhere between Gate 23 and the duty-free purgatory of regret, I found myself staring at a tray of “Mongolian Beef”, oh the irony since I actually travelling there.
That beef had clearly never seen Mongolia, steam-table noodles slumped in brown sauce, vegetables cooked into diplomatic submission.
The booze was cheap, the mixers cheaper, and the whole scene had the tired bravado of a place that promises first class but delivers bus station with tongs.
You watch the planes taxi into the night and remind yourself: this is not the destination — this is the holding pattern before the real story begins.
The staff are friendly, but just seem a little defeated. No one dreams of working here, but they respect the work with what they’re given to work with. I take my hat off to them, respect.
And in that way, it’s the perfect microcosm of Perth Airport itself — another place that aspires to be international but mostly succeeds at being inconvenient. No proper drop-off areas. Exorbitant parking that’s usually full unless you’re willing to park a kilometre away and catch a bus, which rather defeats the purpose of driving at all.
This is a business lounge serving passengers from multiple international airlines, including Cathay Pacific, a carrier that has built a reputation on attention to detail and service. Yet somewhere between the premium boarding pass and the departure gate, travellers are funnelled into a lounge where the aspirations apparently stopped at the sign on the door.
Two urinals. Both blocked. Not for a day. Not for a weekend. Not because of some sudden plumbing disaster. These fixtures seem to spend more time displaying "Temporarily Out of Order" signs than actually functioning. There was a brief and almost celebrated period when one appeared to return to service, only to relapse shortly thereafter. The word temporary has long since lost all meaning.
The state of the bathroom suggests a management philosophy best described as strategic neglect. Overflowing bins, paper littering the floor, surfaces coated in the sort of grime that accumulates when everyone assumes somebody else will deal with it. Apparently nobody is employed at a sufficiently humble pay grade to perform the revolutionary act of cleaning a toilet.
What is harder to accept is the sense that nobody involved appears particularly concerned that things are broken, dirty or mediocre.
Aspire is exactly what its name suggests: an aspiration.
Unfortunately, aspiration without effort is just wishful thinking.
Aspire
