点评:There are two historic gateways into Loreto. Although Porta Marina is much closer to the basilica, I like to enter Loreto through this much grander gateway.
Firstly, Porta Romana is a much more imposing gate. Built between 1589-90, it’s made of brick and white marble and has a short tunnel-like passage. The vaulted ceiling of the tunnel was restored in 2020 and is beautifully painted with geometric patterns in pastel shades.
Secondly, entering through this gateway means that you approach the basilica from the front (Porta Marina brings you in at the back). I was unprepared for the wow factor as we approached the basilica. Coming from this direction, we walked down the narrow main street, Corso Boccalini, and then unexpectedly, it all opened up onto the Piazza Della Madonna and suddenly, there we were, looking right at the beautiful basilica. This was a much more impressive way to get your first sight of the piazza and basilica.
