点评:Kuélap, a magnificent walled city near Chachapoyas in northern Peru, was built and occupied over the course of a millennium, from about 500 to 2570 AD. Originally thought to be just a fortress, it is now believed to have housed some 3,000 to 4,000 residents, who occupied circular stone homes with thatched roofs. Unlike the adobe constructions near Trujillo, Kuélap was built of massive limestone blocks. To maintain its integrity, visits are conducted by very knowledgeable guides. The ascent to the city can be done on horseback at a very reasonable price, but I'm glad I chose to walk, so as to enjoy the diverse flora along the way. Kuélap is considered to be the second most important archeological site in Peru, after Machu Picchu; while it lacks the magical aura of that Inca city, it is well worth a visit!
