Tucked away in the peaceful countryside of Hautes-de-France, the Jardins de Viels-Maisons are an absolute hidden gem a little over an hour from Paris by train or car. Upon arrival, you’ll spot a sign at the gate with a phone number—we gave it a call, and within minutes, the owner arrived She’s a charming and gracious lady, the daughter-in-law of the original creator of the gardens - Bertrande de Ladoucette. clearly pours her heart into this special place.
She welcomed us warmly and took the time to share the garden’s history and her family's role in cultivating it. We arrived at the perfect moment—roses and peonies were in full bloom, and everywhere we turned, there were vibrant flowers, lush greenery, and beautifully maintained plants. One of the most unexpected and awe-inspiring sights was a grove of Giant Sequoias, over 200 years old.
The garden is thoughtfully designed with intimate paths and secluded seating areas that invite you to pause, reflect, and simply enjoy the serenity. It truly feels like stepping into another world. And after the hustle and bustle of Paris it was a delightful respite.
When she welcomed us in, she shared one wish: that we enter the garden happy and leave even happier. And we absolutely did.
I would recommend a visit to Jardins de Viels-Maisons to anyone. And it’s only 6 euro to get in!
