点评:Choose your day carefully as it can be extremely hot in the bottom half of the gorge where there is little shade. My wife and I visited when the official temperature was low 90’s, it was much hotter in the gorge with the heat bouncing back from the stones and cliffs. Towards the end it was more about getting to the end than looking at the spectacular scenery.
I would say it takes nearer to 7 hours rather than 5 hours to traverse the park, and there is still a further 2km to go after you leave the park to the sea.
In many ways it’s a walk of 2 halves with the Village of Samaria roughly in the middle. The first part is steeply downhill through a forest. It flattens out slightly when you reach the river, but it’s quite rocky in parts requiring clambering over them. It’s not always clear where the path goes. The second half goes into the gorge proper with sheer cliffs on both sides. Very rocky and as I said earlier there are large sections when you are walking in full sun
There are rest stops at fairly regular intervals, although the distances between them is longest when in the hottest section
It’s sensible to have proper walking boots as the walk is quite challenging and easy to turn an ankle
