点评:We met at 6 am in front of our inn. Filipe was driving a blue, early model diesel, 4 cylinder land cruiser, and drove us high into the rain forest above Paraty. It was a beautiful morning and Filipe a wise and well informed guide on the birds of the forest, on Brazil and Paraty histories, on sustainable forest management by the early forest dwellers, really on all topics that we touched on. We are all in our 70s and were no longer looking for adrenaline-rich adventure, rather we wanted good company, a pleasant day in the forest and an introduction to the wildlife and birds around Paraty. Filipe gave us that and much more. We arranged to meet him the next day to continue our introduction to the area. We learned how to call in birds using the Merlin app, had the good fortune to be visited by Toucans, met local farming families that Filipe has known for many years, drifted on a slow river adjusting to the dramatic but tranquil landscape, and ended the day on his boat in Paraty bay and afterwards watched the sunset with a cold drink and a sense that we had seen a little piece of Brazil through Filipe's eyes and our lives were richer for that.
