点评:We went to the open day at Parade House on Saturday 13th September. This was one of a series of events taking place there during that week for Jane Austen 250. Carey and Simon are truly great hosts and they have made an outstanding job of the restoration of this Grade 1 listed building after it was closed around the millennium following its last use as Ushers Brewery HQ. After closure there was a proposal to convert it to an HMO - perish the thought!
Our interest was partly because we had relations who worked for Ushers back in the day. Our mother worked in this very building in the accounts department which we reckon was on the 1st floor where the dining room/dance floor is now - back then it was divided into several rooms. And her father - so our grandfather - was a driver for Ushers and he famously crashed a Sentinel steam lorry through the parapet of Town Bridge (about 100m from Parade House) on an icy day in January 1923 and into the River Biss. No-one was injured.
As Parade House is currently for sale I can only hope that the next owners are equally as accommodating. Recommended.
