Life Puppets Show - Rối Mơ的点评
点评：One thing I regret is not having enough time to watch CHUM Show at Đó Theatre in Nha Trang. I only got to experience Life Puppets (Rối Mơ) and it completely exceeded my expectations.
Life Puppets isn't a traditional play with a clear storyline. Instead, it's a collection of dreamlike scenes told through puppetry, contemporary dance, live music, and stunning stage effects.
Throughout the performance, the 12 zodiac animals represent different pieces of life and humanity. Familiar Vietnamese images peaceful countryside, rivers, buffaloes, rats, monkeys, and more come to life through water puppets, string puppets, shadow puppets, rod puppets, and expressive movement.
Each scene takes the audience on an emotional journey through life, loss, survival, destruction, rebirth, love, joy, and hope. There are very few spoken words; everything is conveyed through visuals, music, and emotion.
What impressed me the most was the music, performed 100% live by the SeaSoul ensemble. Traditional instruments such as the jaw harp, leaf horn, đàn tính, đàn goong, Baranưng drums, Gineng drums, gongs, bamboo flutes, đàn tranh, klông pút, and many others blend beautifully with the sounds of wind, water, and nature, creating an atmosphere that feels both mystical and deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture.
Everything comes together to create something that's difficult to put into words authentic yet dreamlike, traditional yet incredibly innovative. It was so beautiful, refined, and immersive that I kept thinking, "Wow..." throughout the entire performance. I never expected a Vietnamese production to be this unique and meticulously crafted. Even after it ended, I was left feeling inspired, proud, and wanting more.
If you love Vietnamese culture, heritage, and performing arts, this is an experience you shouldn't miss. However, if you're expecting a performance with a straightforward plot and lots of dialogue, it may feel a little abstract. Go with an open mind, appreciate the visuals, the music, and the emotions, and you'll discover its true beauty.
I decided to watch this show after seeing a TikTok video, and it turned out to be the most memorable experience of my entire trip to Nha Trang.
Next time I come back, I'll definitely watch CHUM Show and I'll happily watch Life Puppets all over again. I'm completely in love with it. ❤️
