点评:The shrine was an easy walk from our hotel so we visited twice - once on a grey day and later on a beautiful sunny day.
If you arrive early in the morning, there are not many worshipers and no other tourists, just some monks and workmen sweeping the leaves on the extensive grounds and cleaning the koi pond.
We had the luxury to approach the shrine from both entrances on our two visits. The entrances are very different and we were pleased that we had the chance - and the time - to use both.
The grounds are large: a sanctuary of peace and greenery in the midst of the city, and relatively near the train station. There is much to be seen here, so take your time and wander around, being mindful of the signs on several buildings prohibiting photography and other signs prohibiting entrance. Following the Shinto tradition of rebuilding shrines every certain number of years, the Main Shrine Hall is rebuilt every 25 years. In addition to this very large vermilion and white colored hall, and the Inari Shrine with its short parade of red torii, there are numerous smaller shrines of natural wood, each housing a different kami. Sumiyoshi enshrines three deities who are the protectors of the sea and seafarers, hence visitors come here to pray for safe travels.
On the sunny day many locals were at the shrine, including several groups of very young children playing under the trees while their day-care minders were watching from the sidelines.
We spent part of our second visit re-photoing what we shot previously in cloudy weather. We then spent time around the pond photographing the reflections, which were not there the previous day. We walked around the compound and found the important and impressive Noh Theatre and the sumo dohyo.
You can easily spend an hour, or more, here.
