点评:We visited the oldest and southernmost temple in Ishigaki known as Torin-ji Temple and located in the city center of Ishigaki Island, Okinawa. This Zen temple was founded in 1614 but was destroyed by a tsunami in 1771. Rebuilt in 1772, it has been repaired and renovated because of damage caused by wars and typhoons. Guarding the entrance are two wooden statues made of wood. These carvings represent the kings who are said to be the guardians of Ishigaki. One with its mouth open warding off evil spirits is called Ayo while the other with its mouth closed keeps in the good spirits and is called Ungyo. On the grounds, there are several statues, and a Peace Bell. The bell was cast by coins and medals provided by 98 countries of the United Nations. It is a symbol of peace and is housed in a shrine-like wooden structure. The eight Japanese characters say, “Long live absolute world peace.” Both statues were washed away during the tsunami but were found washed up in Sakieda Bay and returned to the temple. Because of this, Torin-ji Temple has become a place where people believe they can receive a blessing to ward off misfortunes and to revive their fortunes.
