Unforgettable - even on the eighth time!

点评：A quick foray into the Visitor Centre confirmed that Gary Muir of WOW Wilderness tour was the ‘thing to see’ in Walpole. An hour later, we boarded his boat amidst the grey misty rain - not that we cared. The main entertainment/ fountain of knowledge was definitely Gary!
With the speed of a Gatling gun, and an encyclopaedic knowledge, Gary incorporated his audience of 40 or so into his patter, weaving a mesmerising tapestry. With 150 laminated A3 colour photos (birds, animals, plants, historic photos), a physical globe and maps, Gary led us on a fascinating journey through his own family history, around the world (a smattering of different languages thrown in), through time, and across sciences from geology to embryology. Somehow, he also managed to act as gameshow host, throwing questions to the crowd (divvied into 2 down the aisle) with the grand prize of a slice of ‘locally famous cake’ moved from left to right with each correct answer. Humour, thespian talent, exaggerated emotion, a lifetime of conservation and science, a prodigious memory, insatiable curiosity and four generations of Muirs in the locality made an unforgettable experience. At least a quarter raised their hands to admit they had been before and were ‘there for the cake’. A fellow traveller mentioned it was her eighth tour, and every time different! Gary certainly engaged his audience, both in answering questions, and moving us physically forward and back to ballast the catamaran over the narrow shallows between Walpole and Noornalup Inlets.
We spotted various birds - ospreys, oyster-catchers, sea-eagles, cormorants and others. Gary knew many of the birds by sight and some by personal names. Some were territorial and very protective of their patch. It was amazing to see them swooping and feeding in the wild.
Before boarding, we had carefully cleaned our shoes at the disinfectant station so as not to spread dieback to the pristine vegetation at our destination. Once docked, we embarked on a short bush walk over the ridge to Shelly Beach on the ocean side. The rain had stopped and clean pine, eucalypt and native rosemary scents mixed with the sea air. Once down to the beach, we collected small pieces of plastic strewn on the shore - Gary works 7 days a week, 10 months of the year, and every day there is more plastic washed up. When we reached some lichen-covered boulders, we turned to retrace our steps back to the jetty.
At the jetty, cake was being served, and it was worth mentioning! Melt-in-your-mouth buttery cake with a crispy lemon sugary crust - lemon drizzle cake to die for. About 5 cakes were brought out before everyone had had at least 2 pieces! Apparently, you can get the recipe if you write to “Gary’s Mum, Walpole”. The rain had lifted, people were fishing in the clear waters, the bush smelt divine, and a hot cuppa was provided to have for a seated morning tea. Perfect. On the way back there was the opportunity to sit out the front of the boat and enjoy the water and bush views whilst listening to Gary’s non-stop patter in the background.
