点评:We were staying in downtown Binghamton on Sunday, June 9, 2024. We knew nothing about the Phelps Mansion, but in looking for something to do I found it online, it sounded great and it was open. My wife and I walked over there about 3 PM for the last tour of the day. The house was built in 1870 at a cost of $120,000 (would be almost 3 million in 2024 dollars) by the wealthy banker & judge Sherman Phelps. Unfortunately, his wife soon died, then he died in 1878, his sons lived there and then died in 1881, the widow of the son lived there another year alone then died in 1882. This grand home was only in the Phelps family for 12 years and later sold to a feminist group in 1905. They held weekly meetings there for 100 years, then it became a museum in 2005. The house has gone through many changes, it has a ballroom addition now, and was even an apartment building for awhile in the 1890s. As a museum the third floor was removed due to severe roof damage and a new exterior facade was installed to look like the original. Most all the original furniture has been long gone, sold off by relatives after the family died. The house was refurnished with same period pieces acquired by the museum. All the original woodwork, large mirrors and light fixtures are still there, though they has been converted from gas to electric. The tour was awesome, and after the tour, you are allowed to wander around the house on your own, take all the photos you want. The house sits all alone now on the block with a public library next door and a large church across the street where this street was once called "mansion row" in what was known as the Gilded Age. This is a true gem, don't miss seeing it.
