Scientifically, culturally and architecturally interesting museum in Savonlinna with good public transport connections
Finnish Forest Museum Lusto的点评
点评：Lusto (literally Tree Ring) is located in Punkaharju, Savonlinna. The lakeside location is beautiful and there are good walking trails from the museum to the ridge area of Punkaharju. Restaurant Kuhankeittäjä and Art Gallery Aseman Taidelaituri are situated next to Lusto and it is only a short walk to Punkaharju Arboretum.
It is easy to come to Lusto also by public transport because Lusto has an own railway station (100 meters from the entrance of the museum) between railway stations of Savonlinna and Punkaharju. It is possible to visit Lusto during one day also from Helsinki, but you have to change trains in Parikkala. Notice also the beautiful linden alley next to the railway station of Lusto.
Lusto is a surprisingly big museum. They have both permanent exhibitions and changing exhibitions. Those permanent exhibitions tell about forestry but also about forest ecosystems and Finnish culture.
This year they have extremely interesting changing exhibitions. One of them presents chainsaws. Another exhibition (open until March 13th, 2026) tells about curly birches and that exhibition was my favorite in Lusto. Curly birch is a mutation of silver birch and that wood is extremely beautiful. It was extremely interesting to get information about the mutation and see very beautiful wooden products made of curly birch.
Actually the building of Lusto is architecturally interesting, too. It was completed in 1994 and it has been selected as a representative of Finnish 20th century modern architecture. The building is round like a tree ring (the annual growth ring of a tree).
