点评:When we decided to go into Southport to see the Embers play at a concert, I got excited because I knew it meant I could possibly see Prices Creek light.
In 1848, $35,500 was appropriated for 7 beacons and a lightship along the Cape Fear River. That year, the first Prices Creek lighthouse was built. It was a 2 story brick light keepers house with a wooden lantern that served as a light. During the Civil War, it served the confederacy as a signal. Unfortunately, it was damaged during a storm.
The second light was originally 20 feet, with the base at 17 feet and 25 feet above sea level. The tower suffered damage during the Civil War, and the lantern was removed. Today, it is the only remaining of the trunk lights. It sits on the property of Archer Daniel's Midland Industrial area. It is not open to the public. You can see it on the ferry ride from Fort Fisher to Southport. In researching, I was looking to see if any tours were ever given. One was offered last year. It seems like maybe the current owners are interested in preserving this gem. Hopefully, they will get it added to the NRHP and preserve it enough for people to enjoy.
