点评:The SA Museum and the SA Art Gallery are right next to each other and both are free.
However the museum alone can easily take a good couple of hours so if you have the time, it is best to spread them over more than one day.
If you are on a strict time limit, the highlights are:
i) the Aboriginal Cultures collection - stretching over two floors, this is recognised as one of the best collections of Aboriginal artefacts in the world. It is well organised and displayed in modern cases, with excellent supporting information
ii) the Ancient Egyptian Room - a very small, collection, with old-fashioned displays. Nevertheless, it’s a fascinating collection that includes some more unusual mummies (a cat, a fish and a hawk).
iii) Opalized skeleton of a Plesiosaur and backbone of an Ichthyosaur - this was quite special as Australia is the only place on earth where you can find opalized animal fossils
iv) Giant squid
We didn’t manage to cover everything. I was particularly sorry to miss the section on Douglas Mawson’s Antarctic Expedition but we had limited time.
I'd been very keen on seeing the Giant Squid. At 11 metres long, its the largest squid ever found. It’s so long, it has to be displayed in an old lift shaft and hangs down over four floors. It sounded intriguing but it was a bit of a let-down. As you walk up the stairs, a glass panel on each floor allowed us to see another section of the squid but the panels were slightly cloudy and the lift well was dark and gloomy so it was not as impressive as I’d imagined. I suspect that kids will still find it a fin thing to do.
It’s worth noting that the museum runs free tours at 11am. Unfortunately our timing meant that we missed this but it would be a very good way to cover a lot.
In addition to the SA Art Gallery, the Migration Museum and the State Library are also within a few minutes walking distance of the Museum so there is a lot to see in the immediate area.
