点评:Our hotel concierge recommended that we visit this garden. She was right; however, she neglected to tell us the garden was closed on Tuesdays. So we walked there twice. No matter, it was near enough to Sumiyoshi Jinja that we went there on discovering that Rakusuien Garden was not open.
The garden is noticeable from the outside by the surrounding Hakata Clay Walls - quite a marvel in themselves. Once inside, those walls serve to isolate you from the hustle and bustle on the other side. When we did get in, on Wednesday, we were amazed by the lack of visitors. We had the place to ourselves for at least 30 minutes before another couple arrived. The garden is small, being there alone was perfect for our photography. If you arrive early, at opening hour, you might enjoy the same solitude.
Autumn foliage, koi pond, bridge, small waterfall, stone pathways - there’s plenty to enjoy here for just ¥100. And there’s a teahouse that is open to all for a visit, although you can pay an additional fee (¥300) for tea and a better view of the garden out the teahouse’s expansive windows. Restrooms are located in the tea house.
