Contemporary Ukiyo-e woodblock prints will amaze.

点评：The National Gallery is a wonderful place to see a vast selection of both Australian and international art. The collection is truly extensive and breathtaking. The gallery is free to enter and when we went today (Sunday) the parking was also free.
We came to see one particular exhibition today “Masami Teraoka and Japanese Ukiyo-E Prints” and though this review is focused on this, the first exhibition of Teraoka’s work held in Australia, we also walked through many gallery spaces admiring incredible works of art, furniture & breathtaking installations to reach it. The gallery staff were all wonderful and happily answered all questions.
The Masami Teraoka’s work is a fusion of the traditional Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints with western influences. Themes range from eroticism and beautiful women to supernatural beings to globalism and HIV/AIDS. His works AIDS Series/Makiki Heights Disaster (1988) AIDS Series/Geisha in Bath (2008) are incredible and captivating.
More highlights include the McDonald’s Hamburgers Invading Japan/Tattooed Woman and Geisha III (2018) & Sarah and Octopus/Seventh Heaven (2001).
Other leading ukiyo-e exponents featured in the exhibition include Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Kunisada, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Toyohara Kunichika.
We absolutely loved this exhibition and it is well worth visiting. I am from Saigon and I did a side trip from Sydney just to see this. If you live locally it is truly one of those rare must see exhibitions.
