Free Guided Tours of Government House - Fri, Sat & Sun

点评：One of the best things to do in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden is to join a free guided tour of Government House. Strangely, this is not a well known thing to do and many Sydneysiders don’t even know about it.
Even from the outside, Government House is an imposing sight. It looks more like a castle than a home but since 1845, it has been the official residence of the Governor of NSW.
Tours are held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, between 10:30am - 3pm.
For security reasons, you can only go through the house by joining the tour but tours are free.
Groups are kept small and tickets are allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ but I think it is rare that they are booked out. I simply went to the small office (just inside Government House gates) and booked onto the next tour. It’s worth noting that I did have to show photo ID to get a ticket so make sure you have a licence or passport on you.
Also you cant take large bags in. I had a medium-sized tote bag and I was asked to check it in at the office (this was also free).
The tours are scheduled for 30 minutes, although ours lasted about 40 minutes. The guide was wonderful. She was warm and welcoming and shared lots of information and ‘behind the scenes’ stories. She led us through several rooms and allowed plenty of time for people to ask questions. One lady had an interest in native flowers so the guide made sure to point out the ways in which they were used in the patterning and decoration on the walls and soft furnishings.
The highlights were the dining room which was set for a state dinner that evening and the formal drawing room.
If you are planning on walking through the Royal Botanic Garden, I would highly recommend timing your visit to coincide with a tour of Government House.
