点评:Even though Telstra Tower is currently closed to visitors, it remains one of Canberra’s most recognisable landmarks and one of the easiest ways to orient yourself around the city. No matter where you are—along Lake Burley Griffin, in the city centre, at the National Arboretum, or on surrounding hills—you will almost certainly spot the tower rising above Black Mountain.
During my visit, I enjoyed viewing the tower from several locations around Canberra rather than from inside. Its distinctive shape stands out against the skyline and becomes a useful reference point when exploring the city. The contrast between the modern telecommunications structure and the natural bushland of Black Mountain creates a surprisingly attractive scene.
One of the things I appreciated most was how the tower looks different throughout the day. Under a bright blue sky it appears sleek and futuristic, while at sunset it becomes part of Canberra’s beautiful landscape, silhouetted against the surrounding hills and the waters of Lake Burley Griffin.
Although public access is unavailable at the moment, the drive up Black Mountain is still worthwhile for the scenery and the views across the city. The tower is also an important part of Canberra’s history, having served both telecommunications and tourism purposes for decades.
If you are visiting Canberra before the reopening, think of Telstra Tower as a landmark rather than an attraction you can enter. It remains one of the city's defining features and is well worth photographing from different vantage points around the capital. Once the renovations are complete, it should become an even more impressive destination for visitors.
Rating: 4/5 – Currently closed, but still one of Canberra’s most iconic and photogenic landmarks.
