点评:St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne. A little peace in the middle of the city.
It was a beautiful October afternoon in Melbourne when I walked into St Patrick’s Cathedral with a group of international travellers.
Outside, the city was going about its business. Traffic, people, noise, the usual bustle of Melbourne. Inside, it was another world.
The late afternoon sun was streaming through the stained-glass windows, casting light across the enormous stone columns, polished timber pews and beautiful patterned floors.
And there was this wonderful sense of calm.
I’m an atheist, but I’ve always loved churches and cathedrals. I’ve visited them all over the world, not because of my religious beliefs, but because of what they represent in history, architecture, art and human endeavour.
St Patrick’s is no exception.
It’s extraordinary to think about the people who designed and built this place, the stonemasons, carpenters, artists and craftspeople whose work continues to be admired generations later.
And then there are the countless people who have passed through these doors. Some to celebrate, some to grieve, some to pray, and others, like us, simply to look, learn and appreciate.
What I particularly enjoyed was watching our international visitors take it all in. There was no rush. People wandered quietly, looked upwards, studied the stained glass and stopped to admire details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
You don’t have to be religious to appreciate the beauty of a sacred space.
Sometimes it’s enough to stand quietly, look around and recognise that you’re somewhere rather remarkable.
And on a sunny October afternoon, St Patrick’s Cathedral was exactly that.
