点评：Healesville zoo was another great zoological garden in Victoria we got the opportunity to visit which had some fundamental differences to any other zoo as it was dedicated to conservation efforts of Endemic and Indigenous animals and birds. We were amazed to see the well-equipped animal hospital or health centre and the activities undertaken to rescue and treat sick and injured animals. The Koala population at the zoo, each having a story behind them was an interesting area to visit. We were glad that we were in time to listen to the presentation by a keeper who gave us an insight and the very sensitive nature of the breeding and caring of joeys. We learnt about the specific bacteria that passes from the mother’s pooh to the joey that need to develop in their digestive system to digest Eucalyptus leaves and how the adults would move from one Eucalyptus tree to another when the chemical composition of the leaves change and become unsuitable for them to eat. It was an eye opener to understand how much endangered this species was. So much about other inmates too, the birds who have recovered from injury and now performing to please the visitors with their skills etc. Even though the morning bird show was cancelled due to the spotting of a wild wedge tailed eagle on a tree in the vicinity we were able to see the afternoon show which was fantastic. We were able to gather lot of information about the Red-tailed black cockatoo from a garden staff who explained to us about this bird and he was able to give us a lengthy description which was very entertaining. To see the Healesville Zoo, we consumed the whole day. The souvenir shop too was a great place to pick a few items in memory of our visit and contribute to their fight against extinction.
