点评:Bar Harbor doesn’t have a lot going for it. It’s mostly a tourist trap. The Abbe Museum is, however, a pleasant exception and a reason to brave the crowds and to try to find parking.
As museums go, the Abbe isn’t very big, but what the museum lacks in size it makes up for in the quality of its works and the exceptional explanations that accompany them.
The works are by and about the native peoples of the area (e.g., incredible basketry), displayed and explained in ways that give you a great sense of the skill needed to produce the works.
A tip: There are timelines that enhance your understanding of the exhibits, but the timelines read in the opposite direction of how you come upon them. For example, as you enter a hall, you’ll come upon what you’ll think is the beginning of a timeline when, in fact, it’s the end. Keep on going to the other end of the timeline and then read going back in the direction from which you came.
