点评:Shame on you Georga parks! If a private individual owned these horses, the ASPCA would intervene, and legal action would likely follow.
Cumberland Island was beautiful, although I regret we did not bring our bicycles. Established in the late 1800s, the affluent Carnegie family purchased a significant portion of the island and constructed magnificent mansions, including the Dungeness estate, which now stands as ruins. It was fun to walk around them!
The Carnegie family maintained and cared for horses, many of which were permitted to roam freely. Following the transfer of the land to government control in 1972 the horses were no longer provided adequate care. A local told us that currently, 50-70% of foals die before reaching adulthood. Those who survive experience severe malnutrition, and have a short life expectancy of only 9 years. The horses are not wild horses. They are a mix of Tennessee Walkers, American Quarter Horses, Arabians, and Paso Finos that have been abandoned to fend for themselves in a place they don't belong. Anyone who knows horses will see the suffering.
