点评:This was an early Christmas gift from my husband. He knew how much I’ve always loved A Christmas Carol — I’ve read the novel every year since I was a young girl, and we watch the film versions every Christmas. Having never been to a live production before, I was genuinely excited.
However, I quickly realised that I’m not a fan of heavy adaptations of classic novels. Although the actors were excellent in their own right, I struggled with how much the storyline had been altered. The heart of the original tale felt diluted.
The staging itself was impressive, but our seats — second row from the front and off to the side — were disappointing. They weren’t cheap, yet the angle obscured a lot of the action. I also personally found the use of sign language difficult to follow from my position, which meant I couldn’t fully immerse myself. If I didn’t already know the story so well, I think I would have been quite lost.
Finally, the ending felt rushed. Very little time was spent showing Scrooge as a changed man, which is the emotional core of the entire story. It seemed as though too many additional ideas had been squeezed in, and the true essence of A Christmas Carol got lost along the way.
Overall, while I appreciated the effort and talent on stage, the adaptation and viewing experience just didn’t work for me, so I left feeling underwhelmed.
